PRAIA DO ESPELHO, A STRONGHOLD OF PEACE IN BAHIA

I imagine that for most people Trancoso is a well-known name. And Praia do Espelho? Have you heard of it? Well, this charming little beach in the south of Bahia, located 24 kilometers from its famous cousin, has been elected several times as one of the ten most beautiful beaches in Brazil. Did you know that?

But I’ll warn you that just taking a trip from Trancoso to enjoy Praia do Espelho for a few hours is not enough. You have to stay in this little piece of paradise for at least 4 days to follow the scenarios that form according to the dance of the tide. Delightful natural pools appear among the corals at low tide and transform the sea into a great mirror. This is exactly where the name of the beach comes from. Turtles love to roam around. When the tide rises, the corals disappear, the sand strip becomes very narrow, and the star becomes the colored cliffs. A beach in constant metamorphosis. Amazing.

The good news is that the Maion Hotel and Boutique has just opened its doors with only 13 suites. The project was designed by Bahian architect Marlon Gama. A super exclusive place connected to the exuberance of the surrounding nature. On the extensive lawn, gazebos with hammocks, pouffes, and tables that invite contemplation. Order one of the exotic drinks prepared at the lounge bar – Amelie Poulain, Sunset, Coconut Bahia – to get into the light and relaxed Espelho climate. Another highlight is Maion’s cuisine with recipes that combine Mediterranean, Bahian and Minas Gerais cuisine, signed by chef Henrique, famous in the region.

Do you know what “Maion” means in the Pataxó language? It means LIGHT. And it is not only in the name that Maion carries its indigenous heritage, but also in the decoration. Lots of wood, straw objects, and handicrafts made by the local community light up the boutique hotel even more. Take the opportunity to go to Aldeia Imbiriba to visit a Pataxó tribe. They have had to adapt due to their proximity to other communities, but still keep their roots strong. They make handicrafts to sell and dress in beautiful accessories.

Also be sure to visit the picturesque village of Caraíva, 20 kilometers south of Praia do Espelho. Cars are not allowed there. The streets are made of sand and the electricity has just arrived there. Cross the river by ferry and go back in time. To stay, I recommend the pousada Cores do Mar. Caraíva lives its own rhythm and is full of mysticism.

So how about a two in one? Praia do Espelho and Caraíva. Two magical places in southern Bahia.

I wish you all a beautiful week full of good energy.
